I'm new to this, so hope i'm doing this right. We could use some help with our Sears Captive air tank. Our problem is our water pressure surges and the well tank seems to click on and off alot. We had someone come out and look at it and they said we need a new tank and pump because the tank had froze at one time, and he said the pump was weak because the propeller was gunked up. Everyone else says its just the pump because it is waterlogged. Can anyone give me any suggestions. We drained the pump and did the air thing. Thanks!!

1st get rid of the tank, it's water logged the bladder in it is shot. You need a decent tank (not a sears) well-x-trol or a steel flex-con are good tanks. If your pump makes good pressure (around 50-60 psi) and isn't leaking I would keep it. When putting in a new tank you need check the air pressure in it first, it should have around 2 psi less then the cut in of the pressure switch. Ex. if the pressure switch kicks on at 30 psi then you need abt. 28 psi in your tank.

Thank you. The pump makes good pressure at 55 now, it just comes on alot, but how do i know if it leaks? You are talking about the pump not the tank?

The tank is what is bad. The pump sounds like it's fine. Get the new tank in and set it up like Lkoops recommended and you will notice a world of difference in the way it works.

Hello again,
Well we replaced the tank with a well xtrol tank and now its doing the same thing. Pressure goes down to 30 and then clicks back on and only lasts about 3mins or so before it clicks on again. Any ideas? I'm afraid we are going to burn up the pump.

You have a leak.

If you can shut off the water from the tank to the house you can isolate it to either the check valve in the pump or a leak in your water pipes.

Or you are using water and it is cycling normally, anything less than 1 minute is bad.
