I normally don't worry with the brand, as long as it has a Franklin Electric motor I would probably use it.

ITT and Pentair own practically all the brand name pump companies now. Their motor is a made in China. So brand names aren't the way to go any more in my opinion. Franklin as far as I know is still made here in the States, but like everything else, if they decided to import them from Mexico, I'm sure they wouldn't call me up just to let me know.
I use Betta Flo by National Pump Co and A.Y. Mcdonald which both have Franklin motors.

Goulds are not the same pump they were 20 years ago or even 3-4 years ago from my underdstanding. Does not appear to be a big difference in all brand name pumps. Did some research on the Betta Flo and i have looking at Norton pumps which look like they are made fairly well but do not know much about either. I agree with speedbump that most of the pumps are the same with different labels, kind of like aplliances.

In North America, the Company is continuing the rationalization of manufacturing capacity between its manufacturing complex in Linares, Mexico and its other North American plants. The manufacturing realignment plan includes the phased move of approximately 500,000 man hours of manufacturing activity to Linares, approximately 80 percent of which is from Siloam Springs, Arkansas. The transfer was largely complete as of the second quarter of 2009. The Linares facility is projected to have available capacity to absorb additional manufacturing activity and the Company is in the process of developing plans to further rationalize manufacturing operations in 2010. |

Smaller franklin motors (1/2, 3/4, 1 etc.) are made in Mexico, Pentek/ITT are made in China.(BOTH SAD!) I have used both, Franklin has been around a long time. The Pentek motor seems to be quieter, I have had some issues w/ 2 wire franklins noise.

So Franklins motors are made in Mexico. It figures. I still favor them to the Pentek's though. At least they aren't made in China. I had four Myers here after they started using them. They were all bad. Two had holes blown through the shell about the size of a pencil. The other two were just shorted. That made me rather nervous about Chinese motors.
I've never heard of a Norton pump. Where are they made?

I am guessing The Nortons are made in china Based on price, but construction looks pretty good. You can look at them at nortonpumps.com

Flint and Walling, Mcdonald, and Franklins own Aqua Duty are the only major pumps that use Franklin motors any more I believe not sure on Webtrol. Goulds & Redjacket are ITT. The remiander are under Pentair, (Sta-Rite, Myers, Aermotor,Berkley). I can see where you would be nervous abt. using Pentek if you had 4 bad ones. I'm always reluctant on new products.
